The name is derived from the Ancient Greek "makro," meaning "big," and "thele," referring to the spinnerets. It is a heavy webber.

Funnel-web spiders typically live in burrows, and they prefer humid climates, as they are susceptible to drying out. They are nocturnal.

This spider is defensive, and we can't find any information about its venom toxicity. However, since the venom from funnel-web spider bites is highly toxic, all species should be considered potentially dangerous.

Builds tube webs or funnel-webs under rocks or logs, or in crevices in the ground.
