AKA 'Hissing Cockroach', 'Hissers'

Originating from the Island of Madagascar, they are one of the largest species of cockroach in the world, reaching 2 to 3 inches in length and 1 inch in width at maturity. Their gentle nature, large size, hissing sounds, and easy care have made Madagascar Hissing Cockroaches popular educational tools and pets for years. They are also high in protein content, making them an excellent food source for tarantulas and reptiles.

Hissing Cockroaches prefer dark, moist, and secluded environments. Multiple hides provide separate territories. They thrive in warmer temperatures, not lower than 80° - 85° Fahrenheit. So, a heating pad may be necessary. They are more active at night, when they scavenge for food, and are excellent climbers, able to scale smooth glass.

Note: Their bodies and feces are home to many mold species that could trigger allergies in kids and adults who handle the bugs.

Some Background:

Hissing cockroaches are not pests and do not inhabit human dwellings. They live on forest floors and hide amidst leaf litter, logs, and other detritus.

They make the hissing noise by exhaling air through their breathing holes.  They hiss as a defense, to communicate, and when mating. Females and nymphs hiss only when disturbed.

Sexually dimorphic - males have thicker, hairier antennae and the very pronounced horns on the pronotum.

Females can reproduce asexually, but usually reproduce sexually. The reproductive cycle starts with creating a cocoon-like egg case called an ootheca and carrying their eggs (and neonatal nymphs) inside their bodies. They then bear living young, as many as 60 nymph roaches.

Females produce two to three broods a year. Nymphs grow and mature slowly, molting eight times throughout their lives. They are considered full-size after their seventh molt.

Their lifespan is two to three years. Some sources state up to five years in captivity.
