Pandinus imperator
.
Common Name: Emperor Scorpion
Native Locale: West African rainforest & the savanna
Category: Terrestrial
Adult Size: 9"
Lifespan: 6 - 8 years
Growth Rate: Medium
Temperament: Docile. Venom is considered to be low potency and not typically harmful to humans unless there is an allergy.
Difficulty: BeginnersOne of the largest scorpions in the world. Its body is black, and the large pincers are blackish-red. It glows pastel green or blue under ultraviolet light.
As a defense, mature scorpions generally use their pincers instead of their stinger. Most people are not severely affected by the Emperor Scorpion's sting, though some people may be allergic to scorpion stings in general.
The Emperor Scorpion burrows beneath the soil and hides beneath rocks and debris, often burrowing in termite mounds. Scorpions do require some moisture or they become dehydrated.
Some people have been successful in keeping this species communally. This is risky due to their territorial and defensive behaviors.
Like tarantulas, scorpions should not be handled. Dropping a scorpion can result in death of the scorpion unless it bites you before it's dropped. Then you both have a problem.
