The Details:
Porcellio expansus
.
Native Locale: Mainland Spain
Reproductive Rate: Moderate - small broods
Growth Rate: Slow
Adult Size: 1.5"
Difficulty: Recommended for intermediate to experienced collectors. From the Porcellionidae family, a very large, broad, and flat isopod
identified by its ornate grey and white patterning with white to off-white skirts.
Prefers semi-arid environments with little humidity. A moderate moisture gradient with recommendations online ranging from 1/3 moist-to-dry ratio. Good cross-ventilation is critical.
This isopod needs more space because adult males are territorial and will fight with other males. One expert recommends an enclosure no smaller than 15 quarts with plenty of individual hides.
Active at night to early morning. Can be fast movers. Clings tightly to wood in defense, as their flat bodies make it difficult to pick them up.
Sexually dimorphic in that males have notably longer uropods and much broader and longer antennae. The front three legs of the male are also larger.
AKA "Sowbug", thus cannot roll into a ball.
Captive bred. Colonies include various sizes/ages.
